Etymology[edit]
First attested as Jan Rutgersengoet in 1608. Derived from bont (“motley”) and poort (“gate”). Named after a tollhouse-cum-inn named in turn after a nearby farmhouse. The element bont refers to the motley nature of the inn's customers.
