Etymology 2

 Bremsen on German Wikipedia

From Middle Low German brēmse, from Old Saxon brimissa. This form is from High German Breme (now archaic), from Middle High German breme, from Old High German brema. The form brimissa did exist in Old High German, but both the phonetic development and the attestation prove that it is not the direct source of the modern word.

Noun

Bremse f (genitive Bremse, plural Bremsen)

  1. horsefly, breezefly, gadfly (fly of the family Tabanidae)
