Etymology

First attested as uberan malsna in 1188. Compound of Buren and Malsen (etymology uncertain, likely a pre-Germanic hydronym *Malsna). Malsen was an independent fiefdom before being split between Buren and Gelre, with Gelre's share receiving the name Geldermalsen.
