Verbs where the ablaut vowel was followed by a consonant cluster in Proto-Indo-European.
The vowel pattern is:
Form | Before m or n | Before l or r | Before ch |
---|---|---|---|
Present tense | -i- | -e- | -iu- |
Present tense 2nd/3rd sg. | -i- | -i- | -iu- |
Past singular ind. | -a- | -a- | -a- |
Past general | -u- | -u- | -u- |
Past participle | -u- | -u- | -u- |
The present also occasionally has -u- instead, taken from the past participle by analogy with other verbs where the two have identical vowels.
