Fundamental » All languages » Old Frisian » Lemmas » Verbs » Verbs by inflection type » Strong verbs » Class 3 strong verbs

Verbs where the ablaut vowel was followed by a consonant cluster in Proto-Indo-European.

The vowel pattern is:

Form Before m or n Before l or r Before ch
Present tense -i- -e- -iu-
Present tense 2nd/3rd sg. -i- -i- -iu-
Past singular ind. -a- -a- -a-
Past general -u- -u- -u-
Past participle -u- -u- -u-

The present also occasionally has -u- instead, taken from the past participle by analogy with other verbs where the two have identical vowels.
