Ukrainian terms with a prothetic в- (v-), which was not present etymologically in Proto-Slavic.
This sound was originally added before terms beginning with a back vowel (o or u) to prevent hiatus when the preceding word ended in a vowel, and in time was incorporated into the word itself.
