Luxembourgish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From northern Middle High German *diufede (attested as dūfde etc.), from northern Old High German *diufitha, from Proto-Germanic *diupiþō. Analysable as déif +‎ -t. The expected Luxembourgish form is *Däift; the vowel was adapted to the form of the underlying adjective (as in some other Germanic languages). Cognate with Dutch diepte, English depth. Compare also German Tiefe.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /dei̯ft/, [dɜɪ̯ft]

Noun[edit]

Déift f (plural Déiften)

  1. depth
