Etymology

Via (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German dūne from a Scandinavic source and hence ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Norse dúnn. The diphthong -au- is a secondary adaptation from the Low German to the standard German vowel system.
