[edit]Attested as Haukes in 1680. Etymology unknown. Proposed etymologies include a derivation from a diminutive form of hau (“pool, swampland”), from hou (“homestead”), from a dialectal variant of hooi (“hay”) and, finally, from hauw (“shell, hull”).
