Eisbein
German
Etymology
From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German īsbein, in which īs- is probably (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Latin ischia (“hipbones”). It seems, however, early to have been associated with īs (“ice”) and to have denoted long bones used to make sleigh skids. In the contemporary sense the word stems from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] German Low German and remains regional (compare (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Low German and (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Saxon īsbēn).
