From Ancient Greek ἐπί (epí, upon, on) + εἴρω (eírō, weave, string).[1]

  1. (archaic) A taxonomic genus within the family Araneidae – certain orb-weaving spiders, now considered a junior synonym of Araneus.

Usage notes[edit]

  • At one time almost all spiders now in Araneidae, then called Epeiriade, were placed in Epeira.
