Etymology[edit]

Attested as Gaesperdam in 1639. Compound of the hydronym Gaasp and dam (dam). The hydronym is likely a compound of Proto-Germanic *geuzan (flow powerfully) and Old Dutch *apa (river, watercourse). Compare Gesperden, Hagestein and Gaasbeek. Formerly an independent hamlet.
