Dutch
[edit]Etymology
[edit]First attested as De Galhoek in 1851-1855. Calque of West Frisian Galhoeke, of uncertain etymology. The toponym may be a compound of a hydronym, galge (“gallows”) or gagel (“bog myrtle, Mirica gale”) and hoeke (“corner”), although none of the proposed compounds can be confirmed due to a paucity of old attestations.
