Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as De Galhoek in 1851-1855. Calque of West Frisian Galhoeke, of uncertain etymology. The toponym may be a compound of a hydronym, galge (gallows) or gagel (bog myrtle, Mirica gale) and hoeke (corner), although none of the proposed compounds can be confirmed due to a paucity of old attestations.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈɣɑl.ɦuk/
  • Hyphenation: Gal‧hoek

Proper noun[edit]

Galhoek n

  1. A hamlet in Smallingerland, Friesland, Netherlands.
