Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as in gannite in 790-793. Etymology uncertain. Proposed derivations from Proto-Germanic *ganda- (wide, widened), *gan-ita (confluence of two rivers) or from a term cognate to Old Norse gandr (straight current) are not backed up by the oldest attestations of the toponym. Compare Gent.
