Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
First attested as apud griffillinc in 1294-1295. Derived from Old Dutch Griffilo (“a personal name”) or Gravilo (“a personal name”) with collectivising suffix -ing-. A proposed derivation from the hydronym Griffe (derived from Old Dutch *grefjô- (“dug watercourse”)) is less likely.
