Etymology[edit]

First attested as apud griffillinc in 1294-1295. Derived from Old Dutch Griffilo (a personal name) or Gravilo (a personal name) with collectivising suffix -ing-. A proposed derivation from the hydronym Griffe (derived from Old Dutch *grefjô- (dug watercourse)) is less likely.
