Etymology

Attested as Griete (De) in 1899. Derived from a shortened form of Margaretha (“a personal name”). The settlement was named for its location in the Margarethapolder, which was named in turn after its chief investor, Margaretha de Mauregnault. Compare Magrette and Margret.
