Etymology

Via early modern (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Dutch haai from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle Dutch haey. The word is probably borrowed directly from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old Norse hár, há-, whence unattested Middle Dutch *ha, whose inflected forms would have regularly developed into haai-. Borrowing from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Icelandic, considered in the older literature, is not endorsed by contemporary Dutch etymologic sources.
