Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as ad heriuuarda in 997. Potentially derived from either Proto-Germanic *harjawardô- (military outpost) or a compound derived from Old Dutch heri (army, host) and warda (watch, lookout). A proposed derivation from a compound of heer (lord) (referring in this case to Otto II) and Old Dutch werde (land next to water, riverine island) clashes with the oldest attestations.
