First attested as harauua in 897. Etymology uncertain. Potentially derived from Proto-Germanic *harwja- (“flax”), *harwôn- (“bitterness”) or *harguz- (“sacred place”). There is no etymological relationship with the earlier Roman settlement Carvio ad Molem. Compare Heel and Heerlen.
