From O'odham hia (sand) + -c'eḑ (locative suffix) + o'odham (people), thus "sand people".

  1. A group of Native Americans who reside primarily in the Sonoran Desert of southeastern Arizona and northwestern Mexico; closely related to the Tohono O'odham.
