Etymology[edit]

From Persian هندوکش (Hindūkuš, Hendukoš, Mountains of the Indus / of India). According to 19th century reports also interpreted it as compound of هندو (Hendu) + کش (koš-) in popular etymology, which would mean "Hindu-slayer".

Attested in English from the 18th century.
