Inherited from Middle Persian hndwk' (/⁠hindūg⁠/, Indian), demonym derived from Old Persian 𐏃𐎡𐎯𐎢𐏁 (hinduš, India), from Sanskrit सिन्धु (sindhu, the Indus River) or Proto-Iranian *sindʰu.
