Etymology[edit]

First attested as myrtha around 1200. Derived from hoog (high, upper) and Old Dutch *mier (swamp) suffixed with the collectivising suffix *-iþi. The element hoog was added to distinguish the settlement from Lage Mierde. Compare Melle and Mierlo.
