Etymology

Philippine (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Spanish, from Iloco/Iloko, the native word for the inhabitants of Ilocos + the Spanish suffix -ano. Iloco comes from an old Ilocano prefix i-, meaning from, and either lukong, meaning flat lands, or luek/look, meaning bay. Some suggest that it comes from Tagalog ilog, meaning river, but this is highly dubious, for it goes against the customs in naming groups and places.
