Etymology[edit]
First attested as jeure in the 13th century. Etymology unknown. Potentially derived from the ancient hydronym *Gebharô or (less probably) from West Frisian hjouwer (“oat, Avena sativa”). Compare Hiaure, De Joere and De Jouwer. See also West Frisian De Jouwer.
