[edit]First attested as juusweer in 1495. Borrowed from West Frisian Jouswier, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian Jou (“a personal name”) or Jouwe and wier (“artificial mound used for habitation”). Compare Jousterp and Jouswerd.
