German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Pet form of Josef, Joseph. Regarding the final -p one might suspect influence by Jakob, but the southern German equivalent Sepp seems to imply that the name was formerly pronounced with a final /p/, rather than /f/. At any rate, Jupp is now associated exclusively with Josef. Compare also Dutch Joop.
