Etymology[edit]

First attested as Kesthovel in 1506. Compound of an uncertain first element and heuvel (hill). The first element has been interpreted as dialectal kets (road used to lead cows to pasture, country road), kest (storehouse) and kets (haystack). Compare Kats.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • Hyphenation: Kaats‧heu‧vel
  • Rhymes: -øːvəl

Proper noun[edit]

Kaatsheuvel n

  1. A village in Loon op Zand, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands.

Usage notes[edit]

Locally (and correctly), the pronunciation of the toponym stresses the first syllable. However, it is far more common to encounter an incorrect pronunciation stressing the second syllable.
