Etymology

First attested as Kesthovel in 1506. Compound of an uncertain first element and heuvel (“hill”). The first element has been interpreted as dialectal kets (“road used to lead cows to pasture, country road”), kest (“storehouse”) and kets (“haystack”). Compare Kats.
