Via other European languages, ultimately a borrowing from Khmer Kambuja (Kambuja) (modern Khmer Kampuchea), itself a borrowing from Sanskrit काम्बोज (kāmbōja), the name of a tribe mentioned in Hindu scripture.

From French Cambodge and Portuguese Camboja. Both these words are derived from Middle Khmer Kambuja (Modern Khmer, កម្ពុជា (gəmbpŭjīə)). Ultimately from Sanskrit काम्बोज (kāmbōja, a tribe mentioned in Hindu scripture).
