Etymology

From Middle High German kapitān, borrowed from Old French capitaine (leader), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 229: Parameter 1 should be a valid language code; the value "LL." is not valid. See WT:LOL. capitāneus. The meaning "capitain on a vessel" is due to Italian influence.
