Etymology[edit]

First attested as kathaleke in 1315. Borrowed from West Frisian Ketlik, derived in turn from a compound of Old Frisian katte (cat, Felis domesticus), Katte (a personal name) or kat (type of sluice) and leka (natural watercourse).
