Etymology

Attested as Jan Hendriks Kattouw in 1691. Derived from the German surname Kattau. Originally the name of an immigrant family which manned a sluice near Hoogeveen. The surname was gradually applied to the sluice, and then to the neighbourhood around the sluice.
