Etymology

[edit]

First attested as thuchterthe in 1207. Etymology unknown. One tentative etymology interprets the name as a derivation of klein (small, lesser) and a second compound noun formed from ducht (community) and herde (uncultivated land, heathland). The element klein was added to distinguish the settlement from Groot Dochteren.
