Etymology[edit]
First attested as Caldehuysem and Coldahuysum in 1543. Derived from Old Frisian kald (“abandoned, not in use”) and the dative plural form of hūs (“house”). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier version of the Frisian name.
