Etymology[edit]

First attested as Laag Heukelum in 1838-1857. Compound of laag (low, lower) and a secondary compound derived from Proto-Germanic *hukila (hill, elevated place) and heem (home, settlement). The element laag was added to distinguish the settlement from Hoog-Heukelom. Compare Heukelom, Heukelum and Hoekelum.
