Limburgish[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-West Germanic *lauk, from Proto-Germanic *laukaz. Normally Proto-Germanic *au before a non-alveolar consonant would be retained in Limburgish (see Lauk and Louk), therefore the monophthong (or centering diphthong) here would indicate outside influence from another West Germanic variant.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

Lue̩k m (plural Lüe̩k) (Rheinische Dokumenta spelling)

  1. leek, Allium ampeloprasum (syn. Allium porrum) (stem vegetable)
  2. (chiefly West Limburgish, Central Limburgish) garlic, Allium sativum (bulb, used as a culinary herb, or plant)
  3. (Koersel, Opoeteren, Wellen) chive, Allium schoenoprasum
  4. (archaic) onion, Allium cepa

Usage notes[edit]

  • This term and the alternative form(s) Loe̩k/Lǫǫk are used interchangeably (even within one dialect), this is especially noticeable in compound terms.
