Etymology[edit]

First attested as nieol in 943. Compound of the hydronym Maas and an element that has been variously interpreted as Proto-Germanic *niwialhô- (hollow, low-lying land), *niwialha- (new house) and Old Dutch *niol (place at the foot of a hill). Compare Aalst, Elst, Nieuwaal, Niel, Niel-bij-As, Nivele and Waldniel.
