Neologisms

@Justinrleung, 沈澄心 How do you suggest we include some of these neologisms that are used by young mainland Chinese. I added 牛屄 to Beijing because when I last visited Beijing, I heard the young (<30 years old) locals using it quite a lot, but I've also heard it being used by young people from other parts of China. And this expression is certainly not used in Taiwan, Malaysia or Singapore, and the locals in Beijing had to explain to me what it meant. The dog2 (talk) 19:42, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

@The dog2: It's found in 北京方言词典 (1985) and its "updated" version 现代北京口语词典 (1997), so it's actually not that new. It definitely disseminated into Putonghua via northern dialects like Beijing. Teochew

@Justinrleung Do you mind checking some of your Teochew dictionaries? In the videos I have seen, they use 勥 to describe someone being good at doing something, but I'm not sure if it is an exact equivalent of 厲害. The dog2 (talk) 18:58, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

@The dog2: 勥 indeed means being good at doing something, especially something to deal with one's mind, I'd say it's more similar to ingenious in English. In fact, due to the influences of Mandarin in China, we use both 勥 and 厲害, and in most cases they're not exchangeable. --Austin Zhang (talk) 06:51, 3 April 2021 (UTC)

Taiwanese Hakka

@Justinrleung The professor in this video (6:04) says that the correct character should be 勁 instead of 慶. Should we move it? The dog2 (talk) 20:24, 28 August 2022 (UTC)

@The dog2: The Taiwanese MoE standard is 慶, and that's how it's usually written in Taiwanese Hakka. I don't think 勁 is necessarily more correct. While he's an important professor in Hakka studies, I don't think he's studied the etymology of the word very carefully.
