Mund (“mouth”) + Art (“nature, character”), already used by Justus-Georgius Schottelius or Justus Georg Schottel in his grammars (1641, 1663) and by Philippus Caesius (1641). Cognate to Dutch mondaard and Low German Mundort, Mundaart, Mundart.
