Etymology

Initialism of 內地生／内地生 (nèidìshēng). Also a pun on Nintendo DS, a gaming console, often abbreviated to NDS. The gaming console is foldable (摺／折 (zip³)), whereas the students are not socializing with others (摺／折 (zip³)). Also reminiscent of English NCS (“non-Chinese speaking (student)”).
