Etymology

[edit]

First attested as nederbele in 1477. Compound of neder (lower, downstream) and a second component of uncertain etymology. Possibilities include a derivation from a term cognate to buil (swelling) or a derivation from Proto-Germanic *bili- (jutting, protruding). A third etymology interprets biel as "hunting ground".
