Northeast India, a region distinct from both North India and South India, culturally, geographically, historically and politically.

Proper noun[edit]

Northeast India

  1. The northeastern region of India, comprising the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura. In the aggregation of seven, the region is called "Seven Sisters". Often Sikkim is included, regarded as their only "brother state" as well.
  2. (informal) The northeastern region of directly North India itself or of Gangetic plains, especially eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and parts of Bengal. This is often considered offensive as this concept excludes the Seven Sisters States from being parts of India.

ʿAẒĪMĀBĀD (Patna), ancient Pataliputra, present capital of Bihar state in northeast India.
    • 2009, Bipin Dimri, Pataliputra: The City of Five Empires[2]:
In the far northeast of India, on the great plains south of the foothills of the Himalayas, lies the ruins of a vast and ancient city. Pataliputra was founded during the life of the Buddha, and bore witness to the next 1,500 years of Indian history.
