Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Norwegian Onstad, named after several farmsteads in Norway, many of which were prefixed with Old Norse names followed by staðr (farmstead); for example, Augunarstaðir (Auðun's farm), from auðr (wealth) + un (friend) (see vinr) + staðr.
