Etymology[edit]

First attested as asterberen in the 13th century. Borrowed from West Frisian Easterbierrum, a compound of Old Frisian āstar (eastern) and the dative plural form of bêre (barn, house). The toponym contrasts with Westerbeeren, a village destroyed by flooding in 1322.
