Dutch[edit]

Etymology[edit]

First attested as demen in 1226. Compound of oud (old) and the toponym Diemen. Potentially derived from an ancient hydronym derived from Proto-Indo-European *amb- (water) or from a term meaning "dark, darkness". The element oud was added when the nearby hamlet of Diemerbrug appropriated the name Diemen.
