Etymology[edit]

Named after a certain royal figure called Firoz, whose exact identity is debated; thus ultimately a corruption of ফিরোজপুর (phirōjpur), a bilingual compound of Classical Persian فَیروز (fīrōz, victorious) + Sanskrit पुर (pura, fortress, town).
