Etymology

Borrowed from Urdu راولپنڈی (rāvalpinḍī), from Western Panjabi راولپنڈی (rāvalpinḍī), from راول (rāval) and پنڈی (pinḍī), diminutive of پنڈ (pinḍ, village). The metonymical sense is from the Joint Staff Headquarters, the headquarters of the Pakistan Armed Forces located in that city.
