Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *ud-s (“out”) (> *uz (“out”)) + *dʰeh₁- (“to set, put, place”).[1] Alternatively connected to the root *wes- (“to prick”) (connected to Albanian usht (“thistle”)).[2]
