[edit]Etymology
[edit]Inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *blaiskas, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyǵ- + *-skъ. A direct cognate with Latvian blaiskums, blaizgums (“spot”) and related to Lithuanian blizgas (“glimmer”), akin to the 0-grade *blьskъ (< *bliskas). Outside of Balto-Slavic, related to Proto-Germanic *blaikaz (“pale”) whence German Blitz (“lightning”).
