Formed as *bujь +‎ *-ьnъ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰewH-. Cognate with Sanskrit भूयान् (bhū́yān, bigger, stronger).

  1. vivid, exuberant, impetuous (for person)
  2. stormy, rapid, violent (for event)
