Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From *němъ (“mute”) + *-ьcь. The word therefore meant "someone unable to speak [Slavic]"; however, some hypotheses hold this was an observation on the relative stoic personalities of some Germanic tribesmen.
Noun
